Atalanta v Liverpool: Live fans match thread!

We might not be playing pretty but we're winning games and as the Nest's own sexy beast likes to remind us “it's all about the win”. For our next match we meet Atalanta who are coming off a gutsy 2-2 draw with Ajax and before that an impressive 0-4 win over Midtylland.

Atalanta’s coach Gasperini has stated his team have suffered several injury blows prior to our Champions League clash, with two key players forced off during their last domestic league game.

This is not going to be an easy fixture however, especially considering our defensive deficiency and Atalanta’s attacking prowess. Atalanta currently sit 2nd in our Group and 2nd in Serie A, netting 17 goals in 6 matches and if we add that to their goals in the Champion League they've scored 23 times in 8 matches (an average of 2.85 goals per game).

A rather potent attacking figure for our vulnerable back-line to face. On the flip side Atalanta have conceded 15 goals in the same number of games which leads me to believe they can be caught with a counter strike and we all know if it’s one thing our lads can do well, it's catch teams on the break.

If we look at the same stats for Liverpool they're almost a carbon copy: we've netted 17 goals in the EPL, plus 3 in the Champions League but are yet to concede a goal in the CL. This can mean one of two things, this match is either going to end up 3-5 with the game racing from end to end, or it'll be a boring 0-1. No matter how it pans out, nothing less than a victory is acceptable from our boys.

Unless we draw or lose. Then we'll find reasons to accept it, but that's not going to happen. Is it?

Let’s consider possible line-ups.

Nate Phillips was MOTM on the weekend but isn't registered to play in our Champions League squad.

Tsimikas, Matip and Keita are all back in training and may be available for Jurgen to select but this will be subject to late fitness tests. Thiago is not back in training and will not be available.

Who will partner Gomez at CB remains to be seen. Rhys Williams has definitely shown he’s keen and has some natural ability after making a strong CL debut last week. Although Klopp may favour more experience - not his natural position but our captain is a man of many talents and could bring a level head into the centre of that defensive unit.

Tough choice as that would take Hendo out of his more natural role in midfield where he can take the game by the scruff of the neck if need be. Plus with both Thigao and Fabinho out midfield has it's own issues to overcome.

The next big question is to Jota or not to Jota?

Well it shouldn't be too much of a question or debate, Klopp simply must allow in form Jota to weave his magic. The real decision is who gets to warm the bench in order for that to happen.

Should Klopp go with his tried, trusted and tested 4-3-3 formation. Which would mean Bobby or Mane being benched or instead use his recently tweaked  4-2-3-1. If so which midfielder misses out and do we still play Bobby?

For me it comes down to whether Henderson is played in midfield or defence. Here are a few possible line-ups. Which do you prefer or is there another version you think Klopp may surprise us with.

Keen to hear your thoughts and how confident you are ahead of our next big European night. So far we're doing well, leading our group but second place Atalanta will be keen to try and close the gap or even overtake us and being one of the better teams we'll need to play well to stop them.

Here are Klopp and Alexander-Arnold's pre-match interviews.
