Premier League 2020/21 | Are we ready to defend our title?

With just over three weeks till the new season begins is our defence ready? We've added Tsimikas as cover for Robertson. This is a sound acquisition as we lacked like for like cover on that side. However with Lovren now departed we're arguably short in the centre back department.

Factor in that Matip and to a lesser extent Gomez appear to be somewhat injury prone and it seems we could really do with bolstering our back line before the off.

Could Ben White be the answer? It's reported we're considering him as an option and playing for lowly placed Brighton we might be able to pick him up for a comparatively reasonable price. Something which would suit our cautious approach to spending this summer.

At 22, White's signing would give us two fairly young (Gomez is 23) CB's alongside two older, more experienced defenders in Matip and Van Dijk - both 29.

There appears to be some logic to signing White, although not Premier League experienced, he did play 46 matches for Leeds in their Championship winning 2019/20 season. Helping them keep 22 clean sheets along the way. Perhaps White is the perfect fourth choice CB, young and hungry with lots of potential and already been through the Championship school of hard knocks with aplomb.

Existing LFC centre backs, Sepp van den Berg and Ki-Jana Hoever are both 18 years of age and so still a way off playing any meaningful part in our senior side but there is another option to consider, Nathaniel Phillips.

Having spent 2019/20 on loan with VfB Stuttgart, Phillips played 19 Bundesliga 2 matches and helped his team keep clean sheets in 6 of them. Which of the Bundesliga 2 and Championship are better leagues for experience I'm not certain but both Phillips and White had good seasons and both are said to be similar ball carrying, calm and assured defenders.

Which of these players should be our fourth CB? Or should we be looking for someone a level or two better, which would mean a higher price and that of course isn't a given as something our club would be prepared to do. In turn could that come back to bite us?
