Crunch time for us to continue our hunt for back to back Champions League trophies is here but in a bid to understand the connotations of various results, my research has been far from conclusive.

We're leading Group E with ten points, Napoli have nine, Salzburg have seven. Any of the three teams can finish in the top two spots and progress. A draw or victory would ensure we're one of them. A loss for us and a win for Napoli versus Genk means we're out. However, if we were to lose by just one goal, even with Napoli beating Genk, we could still be okay as in the following example.

We lose to Salzburg 5-4 and finish tied with them but advance due to having scored more away goals. If they beat us say 1-0 though then they'd progress and we'd be out. The reason there are so many possible outcomes is all the tie breaker rules which are enacted in the order of, head to head points, goal difference, most goals scored versus the other team and finally most away goals.

See, clear as mud but the most sensible conclusion seems to be this one, we need to win 0-4.

Team news

Lovren looks set to miss out with Gomez expected to take his place. Lallana I think is also out. Gini should be back but Matip and Fabinho are definitely still unavailable, probably until after Christmas.

What we might see then is, Alisson, Robbo, VVD, Gomez, TAA, Henderson, Gini, Keita(?) Mane, Firmino, Salah.

I questioned Keita's inclusion as although he played very well against Bournemouth, Ox too has been playing well and will perhaps take the third midfield spot.

Regardless, this won't be easy. Salzburg are a good side and we only just beat them (4-3) at Anfield so at their gaff we'll have to be at our best. We've shown over the last couple of seasons that when push comes to shove we get the Champions League results we need to progress and so hopefully that will be the case once more.

Massive European nights are our speciality and it should be a great game. Jurgen certainly seems well up for it, if not more on edge than normal? Hopefully a good sign not a bad one.

Be careful not to miss the earlier than usual 17.55 GMT kick off time.....

Come on the Reds!
