Welcome to Liverpool... Alisson Becker

Finally it’s done! The goalkeeping name that’s been on everyone’s lips since January, sensationally signed for Liverpool this week in a world record deal for a goalkeeper. Kopites everywhere have greeted the news with a mixture of excitement, that we’ve snared the best available keeper on the market in such emphatic style and also huge relief that we won’t be starting another season with Karius between the sticks.

So here’s the lowdown on our new number 1. Born 2nd October 1992 in Novo Hamburgo, Brazil, Alisson Ramses Becker would start his career at Internacional where his brother was also a goalkeeper at the club. He remained there from 2008 until 2016 when he moved to Roma for the meagre transfer fee of 7.5 million euros. His rise from here is nothing short of meteoric. He spent the whole of his first season as backup to Arsenal flop Wojciech Szczesny but has been so impressive since becoming Roma’s first choice that he was heavily linked with Real Madrid and Chelsea before signing for LFC. He was very much in demand.

Alisson is Brazil’s first choice as well, keeping the impressive Ederson out of the team, so hopefully all this is enough to convince most that we’ve finally got a top keeper, even if we haven’t seen him play too often yet.

Personally, I think this signing, along with that of Van Dijk, is a game changer. If we’d had those two players from the start of last season, who knows what could have happened. Now we do have them, plus Keita and Fabinho. I expect us to be much harder to score against next season than we have been in recent years and we finally have a settled defence and goalkeeper. If we can cut out the cheap goals we’ve conceded for the last few years and keep scoring at the rate we were last year, there’s surely no stopping us... right?
