Rumour mill: Reds to stick with Karius... Really??

Karius-flaps-at-ball
Well according to reports today, we’ve been priced out of a move for Oblak and Alisson and if rumours are to be believed, we will be starting next season with ‘Kalamity Karius’ as our number one goalkeeper. If true, I find this to be absolutely astonishing.

Klopp proved with last season’s pursuit of Virgil Van Dijk that he’s not prepared to ‘settle’ for a player he doesn’t really want and we all saw that approach pay dividends when we eventually snared VVD in January and he went on to make an incredible impact. We all also saw however, how quickly dreams of major silverware can turn into a nightmare when you’ve got a clown between the sticks.

I’ve been Karius biggest critic since he joined, I’ve never thought he was even NEARLY good enough for us and I’ve seen nothing to change my mind, even during his supposed upturn in form. ‘LK1’ has looked a bag of nerves every time I see him play. He was getting lauded last season for making ‘decent’ saves but come the Champions League final, he reverted to type and delivered (probably) a career defining nightmare performance, which led to his countryman (and German legend) Lothar Matthaus to brand it “The worst goalkeeping performance in 20-30 years.” Harsh words but difficult to argue with.

Such has been the goalkeeping horror show of the last few years that our standards have definitely slipped with some clinging on to some hope of Klopp suddenly tapping into some huge potential in the kid and nobody would be happier than me should that happen but I just can’t see it. I mean, what potential? The potential for another disaster?

That leads me to my next point. Assuming Migs leaves and we don’t sign a replacement, that leaves us with Karius and Ward. Karius was a nervous wreck and a howler waiting to happen BEFORE the UCL final, god only knows what his mental state will be like come the first day of the season. What happens if he has another howler or two? He’ll be mentally done, leaving us with Danny Ward who is completely untested at Premier League or Champions League levels. It’s a joke of a situation for a club with our ambitions.

Bottom line, we need a new goalkeeper. I don’t care if it’s an experienced stop gap for a season or two, a goalkeeper of similar profile to Karius or a direct replacement but we need more than Karius and Ward come the start of the season. Klopp, FSG, get it done!
