Player ratings: West Brom 2-2 Liverpool

Frustrating day at the office yesterday, something of a throwback to some of our early season travails.

Salah and Rondon compete for the ball

First off, I’ll start by saying I think if we’d started our first XI yesterday that we’d have blown them away but it’s easy to bemoan our squad players and point the finger at them. After all, Danny Ings scored the first goal and should have been awarded a penalty. Was busy and looked a threat throughout. Klavan is generally solid when he comes in, no world beater but has very rarely let us down. Moreno is just Moreno. Looks good in moments but poor positional play, getting caught in possession and making rash challenges just seem to be features of his game that are never going to leave him. He certainly didn’t do anything that will be keeping Robbo awake at night worrying about his place in the team.

Overall though, complacency cost us on the day. We thought we’d done enough to win the game and switched off after the second goal and it was actually first team regulars at fault for the goals, the second in particular. Very sloppy from Gomez in the build up to the free kick, Firmino loses Rondon at the resulting free kick and why Karius didn’t just stay on his line is beyond me.

These things can happen however when you get into the later stages of the champions league and you’re playing teams fighting for their lives at the bottom of the league. The referee had a very poor game as well, bottled the obvious penalty call when Dawson fouled Ings and missed Ings getting punched in the stomach. A penalty and them down to 10 men would’ve made for a very different game but alas, these are excuses, as is the dry pitch. We threw away a two goal lead in very sloppy fashion and I’m sure Klopp will be furious and will hopefully just serve as a wee kick up the backside for the squad in the last few games.

Some positives though. Ings finally got his goal, Ox is growing in stature as a player all the time and the phenomenon that is Mo Salah just keeps delivering. I generally hate the comparisons but he really is starting to look like Messi.

Anyway, a forgettable afternoon which shouldn’t prove too costly in the grand scheme of things. Now however, attention switches to Tuesday where we have bigger, Roman fish to fry... ALLEZ
